Dancing in the shadow of the branches swinging darkly;
Heads tossing, legs leaping, chests straining starkly.
High and wild a haunted sound is ringing down the glen,
The dead dance in the shadows of the forest near the fen.
I can see their eyes in the distance burning like a candle’s flame,
I can hear their cries in the distance high and wild beneath the rain,
I can feel their breath from the distance running down across my spine,
I recall their words from the distance; “Come” they say, “oh love be mine…”
Now they move in pairs of two, mark me;
Heads tossing, legs leaping, chests straining starkly.
Down comes the rain as the storm hurries in;
But you’d not know it from their skeletal grin…
Now they turn and bow to each other;
Backs bend, knees bend, manes fall asunder.
On they spin ‘neath the peals of the thunder,
Turn and bow, and twirl and bend…
Now one stops, it seems that he harks to me;
Heads tossing, legs leaping, chests straining starkly.
It is my love who the grave stole to mock me,
Dead three years yet here again…
I can see their eyes in the distance burning like a candle’s flame,
I can hear their cries in the distance high and wild beneath the rain,
I can feel their breath from the distance running down across my spine,
I recall their words from this distance; “Come” they say, “oh love be mine…”
